Tips For Putting Your Phone Away (Don’t panic it’s not forever)

Reasons/ways to put your phone away

If, you’re anything like me, you check your phone/social media way too much.

I actually shut down Facebook on my tablet and then opened it on my phone straight away, as though it was going to be something different !!

A lot of the trouble today is people have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) when you’re worried what everyone else is doing.

Are they having more fun than you?

Are they eating better looking food at a fancier restaurant ?

Are they at a better gig?

The list goes on and on.

What you are actually doing is taking yourself away from what/where you are. Removing yourself from the people you’re with.

The fun you could be having

The great food you could be enjoying

The amazing gig you’re at

I realise getting out of this mobile habit isn’t easy, you’re probably reading this on your phone!

I’ve compiled a list of ways to help you reduce your time on your phone/social media.

  1. USE AN APP

There are several apps available which can be set to notify you how many times you unlock your phone, yes I know you’re using your phone to check how many times you check your phone. Getting an actual number will help you, it may also scare you, realise how much you check your phone, without even realising. This should raise your awareness and hopefully cut down the checks.

  1. MAKE A LIST OF TO DO THINGS

Writing a list of productive things you need to complete, before you can check your phone/social media. This should help get stuff done quicker, help prioritise workload.

  1. PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY

This is a very simple thing, which you may find very hard to do. Put your phone in a different room when having dinner, watching tv or in company. The effort of gong to get it, will help not going to get it.

Tuck it away in a bag, I use this a lot, when your out walking, going somewhere I put mine in my rucksack. If its in my pocket i’ll constantly take it out and check it, whether its rang/beeped, vibrated or not, in my bag I completely forget about it.

Set a time where you aren’t allowed to go and look at it, time to listen to what your partner, your kids, your friends have been doing that day. They also need to be phoneless.

  1. YOU’RE NOT THAT IMPORTANT

I’m going to guess the vast majority of the people reading this aren’t Surgeons, Doctors, Nurses, Prime Ministers, Presidents, Coastguard, etc etc.

So, sorry to break it to you, but the chances are nobody will need you for a life saving emergency. 99% of phone calls, messages, social media can and will wait. Leaving your phone at home when you go out for dinner a date the gym etc is OK, honestly.

Your parents and their parents managed just fine getting through life without mobile access I’m sure we’ll be the same for a few hours.

  1. REMOVE APPS FROM YOUR PHONE

This may seem a bit extreme and 1 step too far for some of you.

Removing the apps you know you check most from your phone is a great way to stop consistent checking.

If you need to go into a browser or wait till your on a desktop it straight away cuts down your online time.

Plus it will help you realise that you’ve not actually missed anything important.

  1. ITS OK

I know it can feel like losing a limb, when you don’t have your phone, that panic when you realise you don’t have your phone, is it lost, did i drop it

Its at home, you just forgot it, but still that panic, people will be looking for me thinking something has happened to me.

Then after the initial shock sinks in you’re left in a calm, stress free place  knowing there is nothing you can do about it your phone is at home you’re at work. Then on getting home there’s probably not as meany missed calls or messages as you thought, not many people even noticed.

  1. DON’T TAKE IT TO BED

Don’t take it to bed with you, those last minute checks before you go to sleep making sure the world is ok

The first thing check in the morning making sure the world survived without you overnight

Your phone will interrupt your sleep, not onmly if you nreceive messages and notifications but also with your brain activity as its trying to shut down you are stimulating it with the ligt from your phone

All very confusing for your brain

Also, just buy an old fashioned alarm clock
